"you could be home by now"
Bibiliohead bookstore proudly presents: “you could be home by now” art by local artist, Kristin Farr. Due to popular demand Kristin's show has been extended through December 31. She's adding lots of new material. We've sold more of her art than anyone else's we've shown. It's fun, a little urban folksy with a lot of heart, and, reasonably priced. Stop by and take a look.
Kristin Farr is an artist and writer who lives locally in Hayes Valley. She holds a B.A. in sculpture and fiber arts but concentrates mostly on painting. Her current subject matter includes cupcakes, animals, trees, ice cream, and other enjoyable items. She has also recently begun working figuratively, capturing the human experience through the symbolic world of zombies. At Bibliohead, Kristin is exhibiting nearly forty paintings as well as a few sculptural works including cast plastic blocks and faux fur creations. Her work will be on display through the holidays. Bibliohead is three! As part of our Anniversary celebration we are launching bibliohead.com.
We don’t expect a web site to be a panacea for our little store, but we do hope it’s part of putting bibliohead bookstore on the map, and maybe even staying there.
Don’t miss our regular poetry readings the third Thursday of every month! Usually we have one or more featured readers plus an open mic. It’s at 7:15. Come early to sign up and browse. Thanks to our wonderful friend Don Brennan for keeping this going and inviting so many great poets to read. Please email us to be kept informed about this and other events.
There’s been a lot of change in the Bay Area book business in the last few years. Several stores have closed and others are on the rocks. And we’re not rich here at bibliohead either. Worse still, several San Francisco booksellers have died in the last year: Alan Milkerit, Jeffrey Thomas, and Tracy Hubrich. We will miss them.
So Where Have All the Bookstores Gone?
Recently a customer asked me “What makes you think you can make it in this business?” Usually I say something about “my more than 20 years in the business” or “having a ripe opportunity I just had to take.”
Sometimes it is hard to stay positive about having opened a small business, especially a bookstore. It’s weird being associated with a breed of business people expect to fail. In fact the closing of the venerable stores, A Clean Well Lighted Place For Books, and the original Cody’s, and others is shocking. It should be shocking.
Remember when rent was cheap and creativity and bookstores flourished in San Francisco? Isn't this flourishing why many of us came here and why we stayed?
You can keep independent bookstores strong and successful:
Buy your underwear at Target, and your toilet paper at Costco, if you must. Buy your books from people who know what they're talking about. Don't let corporate driven culture take residence in your mind.
Despite rough economic times, the war and how it demoralizes us, BIBLIOHEAD BOOKSTORE is still standing, still paying its rent, still providing a haven for us old fashioned bookstore types. I even see a few kids and hipsters in here too.
Apart from acquiring pure information, reading is an invitation to create your own culture, adventure, and a possibility to insist on dreams and ideas: to remember yourself, to remember what our world can be.
If you want corporations, Oprah, or someone else to do it for you, well, why bother to leave the house?
If you’re ready for the clear light of day, try a good book you pick out yourself, actually touch. We here at bibliohead are surviving. People tell us they love us every day. This may not be enough. I sure loved Cody’s flagship store and A Clean Well Lighted...
Here is our promise: browsing our shelves, you may not always find exactly what you came in for, but you will always encounter something you need to find. We promise to listen, to grow and change, and to keep up the fight. Promise us you’ll keep leaving the house, coming in for a visit, gracing us with your presence and your wallet.
Yours in Solidarity,Melissa Richmond, owner, bibliohead |
